Laser Assisted Therapy

Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP™) is a new therapy that allows for the effective treatment of periodontal disease with no removal of tissue.

LANAP™ is a gentle, conservative, non-invasive method of treating gum disease without cutting, suturing or removing tissue. Using a precision laser, Dr. Chandra is able to kill up to 99% of the disease causing bacteria in the periodontal pockets. Because there is no defense against the laser, the bacteria can not adapt and avoid elimination as with anti-biotic treatment.

There is no cutting or suturing as with traditional methods of treating periodontal disease. This provides a fast, virtually pain free procedure with that effectively treats periodontal disease.

The Procedure

Because your resistance to disease is affected by many factors, we will begin your first visit with a review your dental and medical histories. This is followed by a thorough periodontal examination of your mouth and discussion of findings and treatment options. You may find it helpful to bring your spouse or a friend with you to this appointment. In most cases, no treatment is performed at this appointment.

On your treatment appointment, a small laser fiber is inserted between the tooth and the gum and the bacterial infection is removed. It takes just one 3 to 4-hour session. Dr. Chandra will treat the entire mouth at once. Most patients feel fine returning to work the very next day.

The Benefits of Using Lasers

We adhere to the highest professional standards of cleanliness, sterilization, and radiation control. Our staff regularly attend safety seminars and are knowledgeable on the latest techniques.

Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP™) is an amazing breakthrough in periodontal treatment. In appropriately selected cases, these benefits include:

  • There’s much less discomfort with LANAP™ LASER PERIODONTAL THERAPY than with standard surgical procedures — during and after the procedure. There is no cutting with scalpels or suturing.
  • LANAP™ LASER PERIODONTAL THERAPY takes LESS TIME than traditional surgery. All it takes is two 2-hour visits to the office and two follow up visits. Traditional surgery requires four sessions of about one hour each, with subsequent visits for suture removal and additional check-ups.
  • It gives comparable, long-lasting results. In fact, 95% of treated patients remain stable after five years.
  • Many patients find that they have less than a 24 HOUR RECOVERY period, so you won’t lose time from work. Following traditional surgical procedures, recovery can take between to 2-4 weeks during which patients can experience pain and swelling and may require a liquid diet.
  • Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP™) is safe for patients with health concerns such as diabetes, HIV, hemophilia, or those taking medications such as Coumadin or Cyclosporin.

Common Questions

LANAP™ Laser Periodontal Therapy combines the proven methods of traditional gum surgery with the precision and benefits of laser dentistry. In addition to the additional comfort and less recovery time it provides to patients, it saves gum tissue that otherwise would be removed to treat the disease.

Because nearly all the gum tissue is saved, it ensures that there will be minimal loss of tooth and bone structure after the surgery. In fact a positive side effect of laser periodontal gum surgery is that in many cases regeneration and reattachment of the gum tissue to the tooth and bone is possible. This is never seen in non-laser methods for periodontal surgery.

During your treatment, the LANAP™ laser works on a specific wavelength – enabling the unhealthy diseased gum tissue to be removed while leaving the healthy gum tissue intact. This means there is much less post-operative stress to the mouth.

While traditional periodontal therapy removes tissue height to reduce the pocket depths, LANAP™ is a regenerative procedure. This means the patient does not lose tissue volume and the bone is regenerated.

LANAP™ offers many benefits over traditional methods of gum disease treatment. One of the main benefits is that the procedure is now minimally invasive to the patient – meaning treatment is virtually pain-free with negligible post operative discomfort.

Other benefits of LANAP™ when compared to traditional gum disease treatment:

  • less bleeding
  • less time in surgery
  • fast healing and short recovery
  • minimal removal of healthy gum tissue
  • elimination of bacteria and reduced inflammation within the mouth
  • safe for patient with health conditions and those of certain medications

LANAP™ is comparable in price to traditional periodontal surgery. The cost can vary considerably depending on the degree of infection and damage to underlying tissue.

The cost for full mouth LANAP™ is usually less than the cost of one dental implant with associated bone grafting to replace a lost tooth. Given that tooth loss is a typical outcome of untreated periodontal disease, an investment in saving your teeth now is well spent.

Dental insurance plans may assist in covering the cost of periodontal procedures. We can assist you in obtaining the maximum coverage allowable by your dental insurance plan.

People with demanding careers or those who do not have hours and hours to spend in surgery; are choosing LANAP™ over traditional gum disease surgery.

Traditional gum disease surgery can take several one hour sessions with many visits to your Dentist. LANAP™ on the other hand takes only 2 x 2hour sessions and a couple of follow up appointments. This means fewer days off for treatment and an immediate return to work in comfort.
